Pitkin County Short Term Rental Research

In 2023, RRC launched a series of objective analyses on the impacts of short-term rentals (STRs) on housing supply, local economies, and affordable housing funding across various destination communities. The project team selected Pitkin County, Colorado, for its global tourism appeal, high concentration of STRs, and challenging housing market conditions. RRC’s team analyzed assessor data, compared it to AirDNA records, and conducted a community survey to measure local sentiment. Additional datasets, including taxable sales, government records, and MLS listings, informed the assessment of economic impacts and STR effects on housing affordability.

RRC’s work is available here, along with studies the team completed on STR activity in Summit County (CO) and Teton County (WY). RRC has also studied the City of Sedona (AZ), Yavapai County (AZ), and Wisconsin’s Door, Oneida, Vilas, and Walworth Counties. Across all projects, RRC provides data-driven insights to help communities navigate the complex intersection of tourism, housing, and overall quality of life.
