RRC currently is conducting two studies in Minnesota. The first is a comprehensive economic analysis of statewide outdoor recreation which is evaluating recreational trip and equipment spending. Results will encompass both market and nonmarket benefits and deliver key insights into direct and secondary economic impacts of recreation. Further analysis examines consumer surplus, health benefits, and how outdoor recreation contributes to natural capital. A key element of this project is its streamlined methodology, allowing for easy future replication and comparison with federal Bureau of Economic Analysis data and neighboring states.
The second study deployed surveyors across the Minnesota state trail system. The collected data on trail use patterns and economic impact will feed regional input-output economic models in IMPLAN to quantify economic impacts of the trail system. These results will help the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources prepare, plan, and fund its trail system as well as understand its impact the state’s economy and its sub-regions upon its completion in 2025.
Overall, both projects look to communicate the economic story of Minnesota’s diverse outdoor recreation landscape and how it contributes to state and local economies.
